History of Stonewall
On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a known gay bar located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan in New York. The police brutally and violently attempted to arrest employees and patrons of the bar for being LGBTQ+. That evening, our community fought back. This riot would spark six days of protests and riots between bar patrons, residents, and law enforcement.
The Stonewall Rebellion served as a catalyst for the gay liberation movement and paved the way for the creation of various LGBTQ+ activist groups in the United States.
In honor of the events at the Stonewall Inn, June is regarded as LGBTQ+ Pride Month worldwide for the brave individuals who stood up to systemic attacks on our community.
The national Federation of Stonewall Democrats seeks to honor that legacy, and we are committed to working to elect LGBT+ candidates and Allies to public office.
